Congratulations go to Katie Nattrass a 2nd year Commercial Photography student who has had work selected for the Charnwood Arts international Art Exhibition.

Vision 09 is an exhibition of photographs from a joint international photography competition organised between Charnwood Arts and students at Hind Leys Specialist Arts College.

Entries were received from 82 countries worldwide and 78 framed images in the categories Urban, Portrait and Image and Word from young photographers aged 25 and under (at the launch of the competition) have been selected for this exciting and varied exhibition.

Young Photographers United (YPU) started in 2001 as an organisation. As we speak, we are shifting towards a social network. Whereas the organisation is only limited to its 150 members, the social network will be open for every photographer.

YPU, the organisation
The organisation's aim is to promote a selection of the most talented young photographers around the world. Each year, YPU selects 50 photographers who remain with the organisation for 3 years, bringing the total at 150.

Because YPU selects only 50 of the 2,000 photographers that apply each year, many of the applicants still approach YPU with questions about the variety, complexity and evolution of the ever-changing photography world. So YPU decided to launch a social network.

Congratulations to Ewan Mathers who has just been awarded joint winner of the first 'Young Design Programme and Joinedupdesign for Academies Photography Competition', the
culmination of 6 months work with the Sorrell Foundation. The images are now online in the 'PROJECTS' section.

He has also just heard that he has been accepted for this years 'Art &
Architecture Trail' at the Wirksworth Arts Festival, 12-13 September,
2009, with a selection of images from the 'Ardnamurchan' gallery.

The Association of Photographers held their annual Student Awards last night at the HQ in London and Mark Hall who teaches on the BA (Hons) Commercial Photography course won the top prize of a EOS 5D Mark2 kit with EF24-105mm LIS Lens from the sponsor Canon in the Lecturer's Award. Renowned advertising photographer Nadav Kander will be in conversation with Rhubarb Rhubarb Creative Director Rhonda Wilson in Birmingham on the 15th May.

Kander will be talking about his commission by The New York Times to photograph all of President Obama's people in New York and the talk will coincide with an exhibition of the images.

A book like Langford's Basic Photography is a fantastic introduction to a wonderful subject. I can’t see how my life could have been anywhere near as full or as rich as it has been without photography. It’s been everything to me, the electricity in my life, the way to communicate with people, to fall in love, to vent my displeasure at the world, to articulate every fibre of my feeling. Photographing has allowed me to express all of this and to make some sense of it.

Photography’s power is as a passport: it gives you permission to participate in a whole series of situations in life that you wouldn’t be allowed in normally. Whether it’s a car crash or a presidential election, society immediately accepts you into this event because you are a photographer. If you take away the camera you are just like everybody else. Photography, like poetry or philosophy, enables you spend a lot of time scrutinizing the little details of life. It becomes a reason to live in a broader way.

Other people’s pictures are enormously important as a way of solving problems: how someone else dealt with expressing great energy in their work, perhaps, or profound sadness. Photography is so accessible that it’s very easy to produce images that seem to look as good or similar in style or structure to existing work. What’s slightly dangerous about this is that people quickly achieve these more or less adequate results, think: “I can do this” and then remain at that level, aping others’ styles. This is a false way of rationalising your own work, however. Photography is about yourself, how you feel about what you see. Trying to express your perspective through somebody else’s feelings is a twisted way of communicating.

CJ and the Apprentice

Congratulations to Alex (CJ) Cantrill Jones who has been chosen as one of the candidates in The University of Derby’s Entrepreneur competition which is Derby's answer to the Apprentice. The organisers said "He performed really well at the audition and we were so impressed with him we just had to have him for the programme!"

You and your students are brilliant. On Friday when I learnt

that the photographer we had arranged to cover our Internal

Martial and Health Arts Event up here in Buxton had been

taken ill, I nearly panicked...

Luckily after a few desperate phone calls, I found you and

through you, your students Tara and Neil. They came up to

Buxton on Sunday Morning and stayed until the event was

over.

They were both friendly, extremely professional and a credit

to your course.

As a mature student (Taking joint honours Martial Arts

theory and practice and Sports Psychology) I have seen in

this, my first year, both good aspects and terrible aspects of

the way the university is run. This was an outstanding aspect!!!

If there is ever anything that I can do for you or your course,

please ask.

2nd Year Exhibition

There will be an exhibition of final year Foundation Degree students' work The Markeaton Street Campus in room MS114G. The private view will be on Tuesday 20th May from 6.00pm-9.00pm. The exhibition is a collection of the work completed during two years of study on both Commercial Photography and Video Practice.

The exhibition will be open to the public from 7th May until Monday 12th May (see gallery website for opening times). The work is the culmination of a project for Creative Applications, that took as its theme 'Industrial Heritage' . Individuals working loosely within subject groups of Fashion, Portraiture, Location and Still Life have responded to this theme.
The work itself is as diverse as the students themselves and reflects their different creative approaches to this area and to their subject generally.
